Keeping girls in sport, an alternative approach

A worryingly small amount of British women are participating in sport. Should alternative sports be encouraged? The Women Sport and Fitness Foundation head of policy discusses the pros and cons.

“The objective of all physical activities is not to make champions, but to make a contribution to building a harmonious society.” This is not a quote from the Olympic Charter or a highly esteemed athlete. These are the words of Swiss biologist Hermann Brandt, creator of Tchoukball.

Tchoukball; an unusual name for an unusual sport. Never heard of it? Most people haven’t. What about Korfball or Ultimate Frisbee? These are just a few examples of the many sports that despite boasting thousands of British participants, are mostly unheard of in the UK.

This website is an investigation into the hidden world of alternative sports.

In the background a Tchoukball hurtles towards the rebound frame, or possibly away from it.

I have interviewed a variety of enthusiasts as they train, compete and introduce their sport to new people. All the sports are unique, but through speaking to the people that play the sports, the national governing bodies that enable them to play, and the charities that are trying to get schools involved; I have got a feel for the common features, which I have tried to portray throughout the site.

Of course I have only sampled a tiny fraction of the sports out there. I hope this site will inspire people to think outside the box of the mainstream and find their own hidden sport.

Hi, I am a Tchoukball Player and have played since iw as about 10. Its an excellent sport to get in to with a high level of competition internationally. I have enjoyed Several Tournament both in the UK and throughout Europe. I have recently Played Korfball too and agree that is is also an excellent sport to play! Both are well worth looking in to!

I’ve played korfball for about 18 months now, and have never looked back. My partner also plays and has done for about 5 years. It’s a much more team-based game than sports like football where individual talent is worth so much more. Plus having men and women play together as a rule is better for rapport.
